Zakat is far more than an annual donation or an act of kindness — it is a sacred duty, one of the five pillars of Islam, and a divine system designed to purify our wealth and uplift humanity. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur'an:
For every adult Muslim who holds wealth above a specific threshold for a full lunar year, paying Zakat is not optional — it is a recognized right of the poor upon us. But how do you know if you qualify to give Zakat, how is it calculated, and where does your donation truly create an impact?

Understanding Zakat: Who Qualifies to Give?
To determine if Zakat is obligatory upon you, Islam sets clear criteria. A person qualifies to pay Zakat if they are an adult Muslim of sound mind who fully owns wealth that meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold for one full Islamic lunar year (Hijri year).
Unlike income tax — which applies only to what you earn — Zakat is calculated at 2.5% on your total accumulated wealth and savings held over the year. This includes cash, bank savings, gold, silver, investments, and business assets, after deducting short-term debts.
On the other hand, those whose total assets fall below the Nisab, children, and individuals facing severe financial distress or unmanageable debt are completely exempt from paying Zakat.
Measuring the Nisab Threshold in 2026
The Nisab represents the minimum wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes due. Historically, it is calculated based on the market value of either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.
Most Islamic scholars recommend using the Silver Nisab when calculating Zakat Al-Mal, as its lower threshold allows more people to participate in fulfilling this obligation, ultimately directing more aid to vulnerable families.
If your total Zakat-eligible wealth (savings, gold, cash minus debts) equals $15,000 CAD (at the time of publishing this article), your Zakat calculation is simple:

Zakat Al-Mal vs. Zakat Al-Fitr (Fitrana)
A common point of confusion for many donors is distinguishing between Zakat Al-Mal (annual Zakat on wealth) and Zakat Al-Fitr (Fitrana).
While Zakat Al-Mal is a 2.5% contribution on accumulated savings due at any time once a lunar year passes, Zakat Al-Fitr is a fixed, small donation of food or cash paid specifically at the end of Ramadan before Eid Al-Fitr prayers. Every head of a household pays Fitrana on behalf of themselves and all dependents, ensuring that even the poorest families can celebrate Eid with food on their tables.
Who is Eligible to Receive Your Zakat?
The Qur'an strictly defines the recipients of Zakat to ensure funds reach those who truly need them. In Surah At-Tawbah (9:60), Allah outlines the eight eligible categories, which primarily center around the poor, the needy, the debt-ridden, stranded travelers, and refugees.
However, Islamic law also outlines specific boundaries for who cannot receive Zakat:
- Immediate Dependants: You cannot give Zakat to family members you are already financially responsible for, such as your spouse, children, or parents.
- The Wealthy & Able: Those with sufficient wealth or physical capacity to earn a living without hardship.
- Non-Muslims: While Sadaqah (voluntary charity) can be given to anyone regardless of faith, Zakat is specifically collected from eligible Muslims for eligible Muslims.
- The Family of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): Lineage from Ahlul Bayt are non-eligible for Zakat or Sadaqah funds.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) highlighted the blessing of giving to extended relatives who qualify:
