Understanding Fidya: A Compassionate Way to Support Those in Need

Allah says in the Quran:

“And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] – a ransom [as a substitute] of feeding a poor person. And whoever volunteers excess – it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 184]

What is Fidya and When is It Obligatory?

Fidya, in Islamic teachings, is a form of compensation for missed fasts during Ramadan. It becomes obligatory when an individual is unable to fast due to valid reasons such as chronic illness, old age, or other permanent impediments. Unlike temporary excuses where missed fasts can be made up later, Fidya serves as a substitute, allowing the individual to contribute to society by feeding the needy.

How to Give Fidya

Calculate the Number of Missed Fasts: Multiply the missed fasts by the set amount per day.

Distribute the Fidya: Fidya should be given to those in need, preferably in the form of food or funds equivalent to meals.

Choose Trusted Channels: Work with trusted organizations like Hands for Charity to ensure that your Fidya reaches the most deserving families.

Evidence from the Quran and Sunnah

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of providing for the needy and fulfilling Fidya obligations as a form of mercy and compassion.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever breaks his fast during Ramadan due to a valid excuse, he should feed a poor person for each day he missed.”

 [Narrated by Ibn Majah]
